Today we visited El Yunque national forest, a rainforest national park near San Juan and took a couple of kilometers long forest walk, swimming in a pool below a waterfall. Won a ticket too.. Before the forest walk I parked the car on a parking area on roadside behind some other cars, obviously too close to road. Rear part of the car was like half a meter on the road, and a police officer passing by did not like that. Well, have to hang that $75 United States District Court violation notice on my wall.. :P By the way... These guys love their plastic bags. Check the picture, the plastic bags only contain stuff from one grocery store visit, our breakfast supplies. Swimming in the waterfall: Driving around the El Yunque park:

Arrived. First lizard seen on our balcony. :) Getting our rental car in here was not the easiest task. I had obviously been blind when booking the car and booked it from a random small company. The rental company was located off airport so first we had to wait an hour for the (nice) guys to pick us up and call them twice. Getting the rental car papers done was an another story, mostly because we didn't have a printed confirmation with us which would have made things easier. Well, it still didn't take that long. An hour and half after landing we already had our car and were heading out of the airport area to the apartment, which was easily found and looks to be nice. The weather in here is finally what we (well, me and Timo) were waiting for: humid and hot with insects and birds singing outside.

Breakfast, picking up a geocache (Just have to get one in each country) and visiting a historical cemetery next to the French Quarters was what this morning was made of. This blog entry is written at 10km altitude by the way, thanks to the well working on-board WiFi of American Airlines. Mia got familiar with a local tradition, as it's her birthday today. The people of our breakfast restaurant attached a one-dollar bill on her shirt. When people see that they add an another bill and give her birthday wishes. :)

Today's dinner was authentic local creoli foond, at a place called Gumba Shop. Gumba is some kind of meat stew with rice, pretty good.. :) I bought some tea earlier today from a teashop and realized that we don't have any equipment for making it. Well, boiled the water with a coffee machine and bought a stainless steel kitchen sink strainer for infusing the tea. Works.

It has been raining heavily almost all the time, so today it was a bit difficult to do anything outside. We drove over the 38 kilometers (yes..) long Lake Pontchartrain Causeway bridge, tried to take some Mardi Gras parade photos in pouring rain and now are drying ourself in the apartment. The weather seems to be clearing a bit, so more photos and Mardi Gras in the program for evening.
